Celebrate Earth Day in the park!
We will be holding several cleanup and beautification projects throughout the day. There will be projects for all ages to help with, which may include litter pickup, trail work, raking, gardening, and tree planting. Free camping will be available to anyone volunteering for the entire duration of the event (9am - 2pm), and lunch and water will be provided to all who help out!

Allegheny Islands State Park and Allegheny Cleanways have partnered again for the 2026 cleanup! If you are interested in volunteering for this event, please follow this hand raise! Registration is not yet open and will be run through Allegheny Cleanways. If you're following along with this interest opportunity, someone will touch base with you in June or July!

This is a handraising opportunity for being a campground host with Worlds End State Park. Registering for this opportunity alone will NOT register you for a timeslot as a host. These are sent seperately as the schedule is made. Background clearances must be physically submitted as part of the vetting process.

This opportunity is related to goose management. The park experiences an influx of Canada geese every year that can disrupt the environmental balance. Volunteers are invited to help keep the park clean and enjoyable by assisting with the removal of goose droppings from high-use areas. This effort helps improve visitor experience, protects natural resources, and supports overall park maintenance. All necessary tools and guidance will be provided—just bring a willingness to lend a hand and enjoy time outdoors.

This opportunity is for all general activities that help keep our day-use picnic area, beaches, roadways, and waters clean.

Join a fun-loving group focused mainly on Purple Martin Nest Monitoring. There are several locations throughout the park and a location will be assigned to you. This group will also cover assisting the park educator with Bluebird Box Monitoring. The season typically goes from March to September. Hours are usually between 10 AM and 1 PM but can vary. Join Park Staff and partner agencies to help get rid of European Frogbit. This aquatic invasive is starting to get a foothold on our lake and needs removed.  Canoes will be provided but can bring your own kayak/canoe. Registration is required by emailing Jared McGary at jamcgary@pa.gov. 

Join park staff and the Sierra Club as we remove invasive species in the day-use area. We will be targeting mile-a-minute and stilt grass, but may find other plants to tackle along the way. You can bring your own work gloves, but there will be some on hand. Trash bags will be provided. We recommend long pants and sleeves since we may be in brushy areas and could encounter thorns and ticks.

Since this is a joint event, we ask that you register with the Sierra Club as well!

Invasives Removal at Vosburg Neck State Park

Join the Delaware and Lehigh National Heritage Corridor and Lehigh Gorge State Park for a Part 2 clean-up for the turntable right off the trail near the Nesquehoning Bridge at the Glen Onoko access area. We’ll take a short walk from the trailhead to the turntable, where we’ll remove invasive species and litter to make it accessible to park visitors.

Position Description - The Campground Host & Visitor Services Ambassador serves as an on-site volunteer representative of Shawnee State Park, supporting campers and assisting park staff within the campground. The host provides visitor assistance, promotes park rules and stewardship, performs light custodial and maintenance tasks, and serves as a liaison between park staff and the camping public. This position plays a key role in enhancing camper experiences, maintaining campground appearance, and supporting safe and enjoyable recreation.

Campground Hosts are provided a designated campsite in exchange for volunteer service and are expected to serve as positive role models by demonstrating responsible camping practices and compliance with all park rules and regulations.

General Responsibilities include:

Visitor Services and Campground Support - Greet campers and visitors and provide general assistance throughout the campground. Answer questions regarding park rules, regulations, facilities, trails, programs, and activities. Assist visitors with campsite selection, orientation, directions, and general trip planning. Explain camping fee procedures and honor system processes (hosts may not collect fees). Distribute park maps, brochures, and informational materials. Serve as a liaison between campers and park staff by relaying questions, concerns, or needs. Assist park staff, Environmental Education Specialists, Naturalists, or Chaplains with campground programs and activities, as appropriate.

Stewardship, Observation, and Safety - Serve as a visible presence within the campground to promote rule compliance and positive visitor behavior. Observe campground activity and politely educate visitors regarding unintentional rule infractions. Report flagrant violations, safety concerns, or emergency situations to park staff or ranger personnel. Assist in securing appropriate help during emergency situations by notifying park staff.

Custodial and Light Maintenance Duties -   Perform routine light cleanup throughout the campground, including litter pickup in campsites, roadways, playgrounds, and common areas. Inspect and tidy washhouses between scheduled cleanings, including spot cleaning and restocking supplies such as toilet paper and paper towels, as directed. Clean or inspect water fountains, fire rings, picnic tables, and site posts as needed. Remove expired camping permits from campsite posts. Report significant maintenance or custodial issues to park maintenance staff.

Professionalism and Role Modeling - Maintain the assigned host campsite in a neat, clean, and orderly condition at all times. Model responsible camping behavior and ensure that visitors to the host site comply with park rules. Present a neat, courteous, and approachable appearance. Refrain from law enforcement activities, fee collection, or operation of state vehicles.

Basic Requirements - Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions. Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to interact courteously and effectively with the public. Willingness to work independently and exercise sound judgment. Ability to perform light physical tasks such as walking, bending, lifting, and standing for extended periods. Willingness to work weekends, holidays, and peak visitation periods. Ability to remain calm and helpful in busy or stressful situations. Must provide own camping unit, equipment, and personal supplies.

Supervision and Support - Campground Hosts generally work independently. The Park Manager or designee provides overall supervision, orientation, and guidance. Park staff are available to assist with questions, concerns, or problem resolution throughout the service period.

Training and Skills Provided - Orientation to park operations, campground procedures, and volunteer expectations. Training in park rules, visitor services, communication, and emergency protocols. Familiarization with park facilities, programs, and local points of interest. Review of park emergency manuals and reporting procedures. Opportunities to develop skills in customer service, public interaction, and outdoor stewardship.

Invasive species removal and habitat management

You will be picking up litter so dress and plan accordingly. Meet at the park office.

Give back to the park by improving our trails for other visitors during this 2-hour work event. We will be cutting back Woodland Way Trail on the northwest end of the back beaver pond. All equipment will be provided, but please bring your favorite pair of work gloves if you have some, otherwise gloves will be provided. This work is best suited to ages 10+ but all are welcome. All participants must register individually.

 Volunteer either Saturdays or Sundays during the season on open days of the historic gristmill.  Every other Saturday, or Sunday would also be OK. Greet visitors and answer questions.   Alert park staff of pertinent situations. Optionally, learn to give tours or mini tours. Mill opens Saturday, May 16, 2026 and closes Sunday, October 25, 2026.

Volunteer to work on Pennsylvania's second largest State Forest.  Projects range from Campsite Maintenance, Infrastructure Maintenance, and Wildlife Habitat Improvement along with various other opportunities arranged by the District Forester.  Please contact the site supervisor prior to selecting this opportunity.   

Celebrate Earth Week by giving back to Ravensburg State Park to keep the park healthy and beautiful! Volunteers and park staff will be picking up the litter that accumulated over the past year. Gloves, trash bags, vests, and litter grabbers will be provided. Please wear closed-toed shoes!

Trail Stewards are volunteers who take time out of their lives to help improve trail systems in our local forests and parks. Their role in trail maintenance allows members of the public to have a positive experience while enjoying the trails. Rothrock State Forest has a Trail Stewardship program where individuals, groups, or sports teams can be assigned a trail to work on that year.

This opportunity is for volunteers who are part of the firewood splitting crew. 

Volunteers help care for Bald Eagle State Park by removing litter and refuse along the park’s 17.6 miles of trails, park boundaries, and surrounding roadways. Cleanup efforts may also include fishing line removal to protect wildlife and maintain a safe, healthy environment for visitors. This work plays an important role in preserving the park’s natural resources, improving visitor safety, and keeping the park clean and welcoming for all.

Join park staff and Penn State Master Watershed Stewards for a volunteer workday on the water. Learn about the aquatic invasives you can find in Lake Wilhelm. Then, bit by bit, we will pull European Frogbit to make a difference. Ages 12 and up, under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Kayak, waders, and gear provided or bring your own. This opportunity is for Pinchot State Forest (Lackawanna/Luzerne/Wyoming Counties). It is for those who enjoy maintaining trails independently or in teams. Maintenance includes removing small, downed objects and cutting of overgrown vegetation throughout the year. Working under staff supervision, the volunteer helps ensure trails are safe, sustainable, clearly marked, and enjoyable for public use while supporting overall park cleanliness and resource protection.

Celebrate Earth Week by joining park staff and Friends of Goddard (FRoG) for a park cleanup event. This is your chance to give back to the park that you love and keep it clean. Please bring water. We will be going through some areas in the park that have old tree tubes that needs to be cleaned up. Areas are muddy and overgrown, so participants should dress in clothing that can get dirty and protects skin, as well as shoes that are okay to get muddy or wet. Participants are encouraged to bring their own gloves. Bug spray will be offered.

There may also be opportunity to work on mulching around some of our recent tree tube plantings. Mulch will need to be transported from a pile via wheelbarrow and added around the base of the plantings. Tools will be provided by the park.

We will meet by Riverside Barn to sign in and go over tasks.

Working with a lead volunteer to maintain District Trails in the R.B. Winter State Park Area. Trail work is typically conducted on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Work involves brush cutting, raking, clearing and tread enhancement of trails throughout the year.

Our maintenance team works hard but it's often difficult to get to our trails on the regular, especially some of the harder hikes. Volunteers can help us keep an eye on trail conditions, do some light trim work, clean up trash, and remove minor obstacles. Notify the park staff for downed trees or other issues. With this program you choose a section of trail and take care of it for whatever time fits your schedule to keep our trails looking beautiful!

This program monitors species that nest in cavities, such as Eastern Bluebirds, Tree or Swallows, House Wrens, Flycatchers, Purple Martins, Tufted Titmouse, and Chickadees.

Volunteers monitor boxes for eggs, fledglings, species type, box quality, and predation issues. Records are collected and added to research for the whole state. This program requires some regular dedication and might involve some messy work, such as removing invasive House Sparrow nests.

The campground host is a volunteer position at 1 of the 6 campgrounds at Promised Land State Park (Deerfield, Pickerel Point, Pines, Beechwood, Northwoods, and Rhododendron). Each campground varies in the number of camp sites, ranging from 33 at our smallest campground and 106 at our largest.  There are no full hook up Host sites available; all sites except Deerfield are electric only with water spigots nearby.

Volunteers will serve as a “live-in” host and are expected to perform a variety of tasks as outlined in the principal duties and responsibilities. Camp Hosts must display a friendly and courteous attitude, be able to communicate effectively with the public and keep campers informed, enjoy working with people, and preform moderate physical labor. 

Due to the popularity of our campground host program and the need to meet various park operational goals, we strive to ensure that all host positions are filled during the camping season. Therefore, potential hosts may be asked to move to different campground areas if staying for consecutive 4-week periods.

Campground Host(s) will be required to provide their own camping unit, and any necessary camping equipment and personal items. Personal vehicles will be allowed at the host site with a limit of two vehicles not including the camping unit- (i.e., camper).

The Masker Museum is divided into 2 sections that feature environmental education and the history of the CCC at Promised Land. It's located between Pickerel Point and Deerfield Campgrounds and offers visitors hands on activities, rain or shine. 

Volunteers staff the museum during the season in weekly shifts from Memorial Day until Labor Day; shifts are from 10a-1pm & 1pm-4pm. A volunteer usually picks 1 shift on 1 day consistently for the season, but we are flexible and there is room for an occasional fill-in, especially on weekends. Volunteers must display a friendly and courteous attitude, enjoy working with people and kids, set up and take down the bird feeders, stock the museum pamphlets and materials, and keep count of the attendees.

Behind the Masker Museum is our Native Plant display garden. We are looking for a few select volunteers with experience with plant ID and care. Work includes transplanting, landscaping, weeding, mulching, seed collection, and more. Other areas include the gardens around our office and the facilities at the Day-use picnic area.

Modern Campground. Host duties include, but are not limited to:

Distributing and collecting camping permits for ~50 campsites
Maintaining campsite fire rings
Acting as a liaison for park staff and campers
Being a point of contact for camper questions and concerns
Not required, but welcomed assistance with miscellaneous tasks (ex. weed-eating, maintaining bulletin boards, Keeping trails open, changing empty toilet paper, etc.)

Spring Clean-up Day – Friday, May 1, 2026

10:00 AM - 2:00 PM - Meet at the Park Office (South Shore) - Moraine

Spring has definitely sprung and it’s that time of year to start sprucing things up and helping the park look its very best. Bring sturdy shoes, work clothes, work gloves and a friend. Our main project for the day is to weed and mulch our native plant garden in front of the park office. We have projects for all ability levels, and the work day will be on, rain or shine. If you have a large group of volunteers (Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts etc.), please contact Mike Shaffer at (724) 368-8811 to discuss appropriate projects for your group's numbers and abilities that day. Bring a lunch and some snacks, water, and dress for working in the outdoors. Pre-registration is required.  Register by checking this opportunity.  

Want to help us monitor wildlife in the park? Help us complete American Woodcock Surveys! Volunteers would be asked to walk a pre-determined distance (~1/4 mile) at either sunrise or sunset once per week during the month of March, then at least bi-weekly through April until May 15th. Volunteers are asked to spend roughly a half hour at sunset listening for woodcock calls and recording visible birds.

Volunteers must be familiar with local points of interest and the location of services that may be requested by campers (see Nearby Towns and Services).

Volunteers must perform light maintenance work in the Campground, which consists of: 1. Posting new / Removing expired camping reservations tags each morning 2. Cleaning Shower Houses / Restrooms each morning and evening 3. Assist campers with honor envelope reservations when needed 4. Checking sites for cleanliness, i.e. Food is secured when people leave campsite and at night, fire rings are free of garbage, trees have not been damaged, etc. 5. Perform regular fire ring cleaning and campsite maintenance 6. Maintain a clear line of communication with Park Staff

Campground Hosts may be requested to assist in campground activities from time to time such as greeting visitors at the Contact Station or at amphitheater events or serving as a liaison to small groups of volunteers. We know that many of our Campground Hosts arrive with a wide variety of experience along with high quality skills. If you see something you’d like to improve upon, such as painting a building or repairing a kiosk, etc. please check with the Assistant Park Manager or Park Maintenance Supervisor and one of them can discuss with you and possibly get you the tools you’d need to complete the project.

Campground Hosts will take no law enforcement measure: the basic purpose of Campground Hosts is to observe and report campground infractions to Park Rangers, Park Managers, or the Park Office. Campground Hosts must set an example by being model campers, practicing good housekeeping in and around their campsite, and by observing park rules and regulations.

Host sites are limited to one camping unit, with no more than two awnings or popup sunshade, one attached to trailer and one over the picnic table. Yard art, signs and flags are not welcome other than the one Camp Host sign provided by the park. Birdfeeders must be attached directly to an awning or to a freestanding pole and kept to a maximum of two. Birdfeeders cannot be hung from or attached to any trees.

Campground Hosts are expected to work weekends and holidays. Campground Hosts generally work independently. They report to the Assistant Park Manager, or designated representative, who is available to answer questions or discuss issues. The Assistant Park Manager will provide orientation for “hosts” and assist hosts throughout the summer with any problems that may arise.

This position requires knowledge of PA State Park programs and regulations. Campground Hosts must display a willing attitude to interact with campers in a positive manner and maintain a healthy line of communication with all park staff. Campground Hosts must present a neat and pleasing appearance and be courteous to the public at all times.

Campground Hosts will get two days and two nights off during the week that will be approved by the Assistant Park Manager—generally Tuesday/Wednesday or Wednesday/Thursday.

Help monitor bluebirds and other species nesting in over 40 cavity nest boxes throughout the park. Volunteers check each box weekly and record data that is then compiled and included in the Statewide Cavity Nesting Report.

Trail maintenance done on Michaux State Forest. Maintenance must be done only to state forest recognized trails. Training is required to blaze and brush trails.

Help at plant sale, set up and running the sale.

Susquehannock State Forest is looking for volunteers to become trail stewards to reestablish/maintain the many miles of "multi-use" red blazed trails, and "hiking only" yellow blazed trails, within the district. We are looking for "multi-use" and "hiking only" stewards to adopt any hiking/multi-use trails in our district. Trail System Stewards traverse their assigned trails quarterly. This would include brushing, blazing, reporting downed trees, and benching any of the multi-use and hiking trails in the Susquehannock State Forest.  Please note, only volunteers with chainsaw certifications may cut trees off of the trail. The Outpost, campground store run by the FOCSP, needs attendants to help with firewood and retail sales to campers.

Experience Codorus Outdoors (ECO) is a large family-oriented fundraising event held 2 days in June each year.  Assistance is need with set-up, day of event, and tear-down.
