Opportunities From: Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources

Volunteer: Buchanan State Forest Trail Stewards: Sign-up Here!

Routine trail maintenance is needed across our Sideling Hill, Bear Valley, and Chaneysville Divisions. This year-long opportunity is open to anyone interested in becoming a Steward of Buchanan State Forest. Activities include scouting and assessing trails (submitting a trail assessment form), clearing and brushing back overgrown trails, refreshing/updating trail blaze markers, or other tasks as assigned by the recreation forester. Trails may be chosen voluntarily or assigned based on known trail conditions. Nationally-recognized chainsaw safety certificates must be provided for those looking to operate gas or electric chainsaws. Any questions should be directed to Codi Clapper via email at coclapper@pa.gov. Please reach out for more details.

Due to the remoteness of our trails and physically demanding nature of trail work, it is not expected that every volunteer will clear trails. Being descriptive of what is seen in the field and including pictures and GPS points of key features such as blowdowns and erosion concerns is very valuable to Forestry staff. Though trail maintenance is needed across the district, striving to be a good reporter of trail conditions is the primary goal of this opportunity. Please submit your hours and include a description of work completed on a monthly basis.

IMPORTANT: New and returning volunteers must sign up for this opportunity annually to remain an active member. Becoming a "fan" of a location bookmarks the location for you but remains private; signing up for an opportunity is required to connect you with the coordinators of the forest district. New and returning volunteers will be awarded with 1/2 hour of volunteer service for their first registration.
