This is going to be a big project on the West Watershed Trail to continue improving the trail tread's drainage and erosion problems. The Watershed Trails are many park visitors' favorite area to hike and explore, as well as where many of the Environmental Education Center's educational programs take place. Improving the trail's drainage and tread will ensure better access and enjoyment for visitors of Kings Gap.

We will be installing limestone, thick honeycomb mat, geomat fabric, sandstone and more water bars at 7 locations that have been identified as problem areas. We will not get all these locations done in one day, but we are hoping to finish at least 3 spots.

Volunteers will meet at Kings Gap Hollow Use Area at 9 am. Please wear sturdy shoes/boots, bring water and dress for the weather. Kings Gap EEC will provide high visibility vests, work gloves, extra water bottles and Gatorade.

Assists park maintenance staff with the upkeep, repair, and stewardship of designated equestrian trails. With staff supervision and approval, volunteers help ensure trails are safe, passable, and sustainable for horse and rider.

Task and duties will include keeping the trails free of obstructions and obstacles. Maintaining a trail corridor width of 14ft and height clearance of 8ft. Along with identifying ruts, holes, and muddy sections, and remediating them with park provided material.

Help us maintain the Butterfly Garden near the Hawk Watch Tower and other flowerbeds. Tasks may include removing invasive species, tending to birdfeeders, watering plants, maintaining pathways, and/or establishing new native plants under the direction of park staff.

Help keep State Forest trails looking beautiful! Our maintenance team works hard, but it's difficult to get to all of our trails regularly. With this project, you can choose a section of trail to care for during any time that fits your schedule. Volunteers can help us keep an eye on trail conditions, do some light trim work, clean up trash, and remove minor obstacles. Notify the park staff for downed trees or other issues requiring additional equipment or resources.

Join us on Saturday, August 15 from 9 AM to 12 PM to continue construction of the Hearth Tender Trail by digging, clearing, and tamping ground to create a quality sustainable trail tread!

· We’ll be using hoes, pick mattocks, cutter mattocks, rakes, wheelbarrows, and shovels.

Evansburg maintains a number of cavity nest boxes throughout the park.  As part of one of our longest running citizen-science projects, volunteers assist with routine nest box checks throughout the nesting season. Collecting data on species and nesting success rates, as well as conducting maintenance, sanitation duties, and entering season data. 

Evansburg's cavity nest boxes routinely host bluebirds, swallows, wrens, and sparrows, among others. This is a seasonal program running spring through fall.

Position Description - The Campground Host & Visitor Services Ambassador serves as an on-site volunteer representative of Pine Tree State Park, supporting campers and assisting park staff within the campground. The host provides visitor assistance, promotes park rules and stewardship, performs light custodial and maintenance tasks, and serves as a liaison between park staff and the camping public. This position plays a key role in enhancing camper experiences, maintaining campground appearance, and supporting safe and enjoyable recreation. 

Campground Hosts are provided a designated campsite in exchange for volunteer service and are expected to serve as positive role models by demonstrating responsible camping practices and compliance with all park rules and regulations. 

General Responsibilities include: 

Visitor Services and Campground Support - Greet campers and visitors and provide general assistance throughout the campground. Answer questions regarding park rules, regulations, facilities, trails, programs, and activities. Assist visitors with campsite selection, orientation, directions, and general trip planning. Explain camping fee procedures and honor system processes (hosts may not collect fees). Distribute park maps, brochures, and informational materials. Serve as a liaison between campers and park staff by relaying questions, concerns, or needs. Assist park staff, as appropriate. 

Stewardship, Observation, and Safety - Serve as a visible presence within the campground to promote rule compliance and positive visitor behavior. Observe campground activity and politely educate visitors regarding unintentional rule infractions. Report flagrant violations, safety concerns, or emergency situations to park staff or ranger personnel. Assist in securing appropriate help during emergency situations by notifying park staff. 

Custodial and Light Maintenance Duties -   Perform routine light cleanup throughout the campground, including litter pickup in campsites, roadways, playgrounds, and common areas. Inspect and tidy washhouses between scheduled cleanings, including spot cleaning and restocking supplies such as toilet paper and paper towels, as directed. Clean or inspect water fountains, fire rings, picnic tables, and site posts as needed. Remove expired camping permits from campsite posts. Report significant maintenance or custodial issues to park maintenance staff. 

Professionalism and Role Modeling - Maintain the assigned host campsite in a neat, clean, and orderly condition at all times. Model responsible camping behavior and ensure that visitors to the host site comply with park rules. Present a neat, courteous, and approachable appearance. Refrain from law enforcement activities, fee collection, or operation of state vehicles. 

Basic Requirements - Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions. Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to interact courteously and effectively with the public. Willingness to work independently and exercise sound judgment. Ability to perform light physical tasks such as walking, bending, lifting, and standing for extended periods. Willingness to work weekends, holidays, and peak visitation periods. Ability to remain calm and helpful in busy or stressful situations. Must provide own camping unit, equipment, and personal supplies. 

Volunteer workday hosted by the Friends of Colonel Denning. All are welcome to join. Plan is to pick up trash along Rt. 233. for the Adopt-A-Highway program. Meet at 9 a.m. at Pavilion 1 parking lot area.

Help us create the best Apple Festival yet for America's 250th birthday! We are seeking a WIDE variety of volunteers, from folks to help stir apple butter, provide mill tours, run craft activities, help with environmental education tables, lend a hand with vendor setup, and assist with Friends merchandise booths. The dates for the event are October 17th and 18th, but some volunteer help may be needed in the weeks prior to the event. 

We are tossing around the idea of hosting a Halloween Trunk-or-Treat event at the park! However, we need to secure volunteer assistance to help us manage our booth, parking, and visitors during this event. If you have an interest and availability on Fri. October 23rd or Sat. Every Wednesday morning, in the height of the summer, volunteers lead a program that provides 4 different crafts for kids at Falls Pavilion. These crafts use recycled materials and often involve drumming up donations and prep work. Volunteers are needed for prepping materials for the crafts and sorting donations. Varden Conservation Day is a celebration of the history and natural value of Varden Conservation Area. This event is open to the public and hosts music, food, a kids' fishing derby, and speakers (including 1 with live animals!); it takes place at the Tannery Tract picnic area. 

Volunteers are needed to help Park Staff and the Friends of Varden with parking, manning tables, helping kids at the fishing derby, set up, and clean up. 

The opportunity's shift for the day prior is for anyone to enter hours they took to bake donations for the Bake Sale table, set up signs, or spread the word about the event. This is a catch-all shift for prep and planning in the weeks leading up to the event.

Volunteers play an important role in welcoming visitors, providing information, distributing maps and helping guests enjoy their experience at Kings Gap. A hand-raising opportunity for those interested in volunteering their time at Worlds End State Park on various projects or needs. This is not the opportunity for campground hosting. Please register separately with that hand-raising opportunity if you'd like to be a host.

General park maintenance work to include painting, trail clearing, litter pick-up, tree trimming with pruners and other work as needed.

Volunteer Responsibilities
The Bat volunteers focus on emergence counts of maternity colonies. They also conduct park-wide surveys to determine the extent of bat hunting grounds and seasonal movements.

Volunteers record GPS data, weather conditions and the presence of other wildlife in the vicinity. They also note unusual behavior within the bat colony.

The group builds, installs and repairs bat boxes located within the park. They look for invading predators and remove wasp nests during the colder months.

Availability and Time Commitment
Bat volunteers meet biweekly as a group just prior to sunset from April through September to count bats. Volunteers use flashlights, counters, and monitoring tools to aid in the count.

The volunteers who maintain the 37 miles of hiking and equestrian trails at Nockamixon State Park are a busy and hardworking crew, with tasks that include chainsawing to remove downed trees, maintaining and repairing trailhead boards and directional signs, painting trail markers, weed whacking, mowing, scything, and trimming. 

On occasion, we take on special projects such as building bridges or rehabbing sections of trail.  We wouldn’t be able to do the work if not for the extensive equipment and machinery that help us get the job done.  

We are kept very busy and the work can be challenging, but being on the trail with our wonderful team of workers is a worthwhile experience – not to mention a great workout!

In addition to trail crew workdays, we also have opportunities for volunteers to monitor trails on their own schedule. Monitors walk assigned trails on a regular basis, making note of trail conditions and reporting any hazards or issues.

Help maintain, restore, or refresh parts of the park as needed and under the guidance of park staff.  This is a "catch all" category for specific volunteer requests which do not fall into any other Opportunity category.

With direction from park staff, volunteers will assist with the planning, planting, and care of native trees and shrubs throughout designated park areas.

Skills will include planting techniques, understanding of native trees/shrubs and their needs, and protection methods from deer and other wildlife. Along with providing water to saplings during times of drought, and monitoring general health.

The volunteer helps enhance forest health, improve habitat, and support long-term ecological sustainability while contributing to visitor enjoyment and resource protection.

McConnells Mill is a gem of history beloved by many. Volunteer to show the mill some tender loving care on select Saturday mornings from 10:30 AM to Noon. Sweep floors, carefully clean a historic piece of milling equipment, or wipe signs. Park at Kildoo or Point parking, hike down to the mill, and receive instructions from the park staff. This is a recurring opportunity; sign up for the Saturdays you wish. Thank you for caring about the mill!

This opportunity is for individuals who are interested in helping mix soil, pot donated saplings, weed the tree pen, and complete other work related to small-plant storage before planting events.

This project is for volunteers working to maintain the riparian buffer project along Mountain Creek, led by Tom Reidenbaugh of the MFA. 

Washington Crossing Park has a total of 42 cavity nest boxes throughout the park.

Help monitor Bluebirds and other species nesting throughout the park. Volunteers check each box weekly and record data that is then compiled and included in the Statewide Cavity Nesting Report.

Volunteers staff the entrance or exit of the Bear Hole Trail Drive-Thru program at Swatara State Park. Responsibilities include greeting visitors, reviewing program rules, explaining park attributes and points of interest along the trail, managing traffic flow, and helping ensure a smooth and safe experience for all participants. Volunteers will also keep attendance records of program participants. The program operates from 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on the second Friday and Saturday of each month, and on the fourth Friday and Saturday during March, April, September, and October. The Drive-Thru does not operate from December through February.

Help! Our wildflower habitat is being over run by garlic mustard and Japanese honeysuckle. We need volunteers to help us control the invasives so that our rare native species can continue to thrive. This is a work-on-your own, but we may have some planned work days. Add if you are interested in helping!

The Interpretive Program Facilitator & Naturalist serves as an educational ambassador for Greenwood Furnace State Park, assisting with the delivery of high-quality environmental education and interpretive programming. In this role, the volunteer represents the park and the Pennsylvania Bureau of State Parks by engaging visitors of all ages through structured programs, guided experiences, and informal interpretation.

Due to the popularity of our campground host program and the need to meet various park operational goals, we strive to ensure that all host positions are filled during the camping season. Therefore, potential hosts may be asked to move to different campground areas if need be. We prefer hosts stay for consecutive 4-week periods.

Campground Host(s) will be required to provide their own camping unit, and any necessary camping equipment and personal items. Personal vehicles will be allowed at the host site with a limit of two vehicles not including the camping unit- (i.e., camper).

• Shovels, buckets, gloves, etc. will be provided for cleaning fire rings and picking up litter. Materials are located in the bathhouse pipe chase(s).

• A traffic cone will be available to put outside of the host site to get ahold of Rangers on patrol. For Ranger contact in an emergency call 911.

• Ask park staff if you would like any other tools or accommodations. PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES The primary responsibility of the campground host is to assist campers by answering questions and explaining the Park Rules and Regulations which apply to them. They must be familiar with State Park Rules and Regulations. Volunteers must perform light maintenance work around their assigned campground, which consists of:

• Maintaining camping permits daily on-site posts. Permits and Camper Reports are to be picked up at Office at 2pm. • Keeping the area free of litter.

• Checking sites for cleanliness, cleaning fire rings, when not occupied. • Checking restrooms- minor clean ups, restocking toilet paper, etc.

• Keeping the kiosk(s) well stocked with park maps and other relative information.

• Notify Park office with complaints/concerns of visitors to including but not limited to damage to facilities, violations of Rules and Regulations, and lost hikers or children.

• Bringing Lost and Found items up to the Park Office.

• If a cabin or cottage user checks in after-hours, inform them of the afterhours check-in procedures posted at the park office. Keys are placed in the office entry way in steel boxes marked cabin/cottage keys at Office Closing.

Volunteers are NOT to directly enforce any rules and regulations, be confrontational with guests, or engage in any combative behavior with park visitors. Visitors may be politely reminded of the rules, but not directly told what to do.

Any issues with park visitors MUST be reported to the park office or ranger staff. Volunteers are expected to work weekends and holidays. Volunteers get two days and nights off during the week which will be approved by the DCNR Ranger Supervisor. The Park Office must be notified of any other requests for time away. A sign-in /sign out log is located in the Park Office for day-long or multiple day absences. Volunteers’ generally work independently. They report to the DCNR Ranger Supervisor who is available to answer questions or discuss problems. The DCNR Ranger Supervisor will provide a short orientation for hosts' and assist hosts throughout the summer with any problems which may arise.
