Under the direction of park staff, take part in removing or mitigating invasive plant species in Fort Washington to help support more native biodiversity. 

Interested in learning more about gardening with native plants? Volunteer to mulch, pull weeds, divide plants, and amend soil in the center's native plant garden. We provide instruction, tools, and weeding mats. This is a seasonal opportunity.

2026 Schedule

This opportunity will occur every Monday from March 23 - September 28, 2026, with the exception of April 20th. Other dates may be canceled due to unforeseen circumstances, please pay attention to your email, you will be notified in advance. 

We are looking for Donut Hole and Chuck Keiper Trail System Stewards to adopt sections of the two state forest hiking trails in our district. Trail System Stewards traverse their assigned trails quarterly. Stewards will brush trails; report downed trees and perform other routine maintenance such as benching and blazing. To adopt a trail section, please call our district office at 570-923-6011 after signing up.

Join the Friends of Codorus State Park as they help get the park ready for summer!  grab a friend and meet at Pavilion #2. 

If you are bringing a group, every member of the group must be registered as a Conservation Volunteer on this site.  If your group includes minors (i.e. scout groups) they will need to have a parent's signature prior to the event - paper copies are available by emailing NRCodorusEEPrograms@pa.gov.

Volunteer Position Title: Turtle Care

DCNR staff will perform evaluations of performance and provide feedback for development.

Help us learn more about our past! There are opportunities for individuals to help the park through research. This would be mostly on your own through the use of a computer or historical societies. No expertise needed! A good wintertime activity or for those who enjoy local history.

Volunteer to maintain one of our 9 trails for 2026! Adopt-a-trail volunteers are expected to walk their designated trail monthly from April through October to pick up trash, notify staff of hazards, and lightly trim over-hanging brush as needed. 

Spur trail is a 0.5 mile trail from the campground down to Little Buffalo Road and the lake. It is not a loop. This trail will need occasional pruning and trash clean up. It is one of our lower-maintenance trails. 

Building and maintaining the section of the Mason Dixon Trail that goes through Susquehanna Riverlands State Park. 

Join DCNR staff and partners to clean up the Susquehanna River Flood Plain in Susquehanna Riverlands State Park. There will be 2 or 3 dates in the year that we will meet as a group to do this work.

Many miles of the hiking trails in Moraine State Park are a part of the North Country Trail Association (NCTA), Butler Chapter. Discover training opportunities and help maintain the trail as part of this dedicated group of volunteers. We are looking for volunteers!  Would you like to be a trail adopter? The Friends of the Pennsylvania White Clay Creek Preserve is a volunteer community service organization committed to supporting the Preserve through improvement/maintenance projects, educational programs, and fundraising. It was chartered by a group of concerned citizens to support the Preserve in March 2012, and in 2019 they launched a subcommittee, London Tract Historical Committee, to address the historical structures within the park.

The Friends is a local chapter of the Pennsylvania Parks and Forests Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to helping all of Pennsylvania’s state parks, forests, and preserves. In 2022 the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources estimates that 214,469 people visited the White Clay Creek Preserve.

Memorial Lake State Park has over 2 miles of trails and there may be an opportunity for you to assist with keeping them clean, clear, and accessible to park visitors. Joseph Ibberson Conservation Area has over 8 miles of trails and there may be an opportunity for you to assist with keeping them clean, clear, and accessible to park visitors. Swatara State Park has approximately 34 miles of trails and there may be an opportunity for you to assist with keeping them clean, clear, and accessible to park visitors. Sproul State Forest is looking for volunteers to become trail stewards to reestablish/maintain the many miles of abandoned "multi-use" red blazed trails, and "hiking only" yellow blazed trails, within the district. We are looking for "multi-use" and "hiking only" stewards to adopt any hiking/multi-use trails in our district. Trail System Stewards traverse their assigned trails quarterly. This would include brushing, blazing, reporting downed trees, and benching any of the multi-use and hiking trails in the Sproul State Forest.  Please note, only volunteers with chainsaw certifications may cut trees off of the trail. Volunteers, please call 570-923-6011 with your request to adopt a trail before performing any work. 

This opportunity is designated for club volunteer workdays, and other designated days set up by the district to help maintain Whiskey Springs and Bloody Skillet ATV Trail Systems.

We are looking for up to 20 volunteers for a spray project in the Russell P. Letterman Wild Area. We will be spraying Japanese barberry as the first phase in eliminating invasive plants and restoring native ecosystems in the Sproul State Forest.  All PPE for spraying will be provided by the district. Volunteers will not be asked to mix any chemical herbicide.  We are just asking for help carrying gear down into the wild area and help with spraying 20-30 acres of barberry.  If you are interested in rehabilitating native ecosystems, please consider volunteering.  Please be sure to add the correct contact information when you sign up, and we will send instructions to all who are interested when the registration closes. 

We are searching for volunteers to help us clear the Camelback Road on April 25, 2026.  Volunteers will park in the top parking lot (Lot Number 2) and walk to the bottom of the mountain while clearing the roadsides.  Volunteers will be using small cutting tools, loppers, handsaws, pole saws, to clear the overhanging vegetation along Camelback Road.

Tobyhanna State Park Complex (including Gouldsboro State Park) has over 30 miles of trails and there may be an opportunity for you to assist with keeping them clean, clear, and accessible to park visitors. Ohiopyle State Park is looking for individual(s) to fill two campground host positions.  There are two host sites available 1 with full hookup amenities but is not pet friendly and one site with Electric 120/30/50 amp and is pet friendly.  We would like the host to stay 3-4 weeks but longer opportunities are available. 

Volunteers must set an example by being a model camper practicing good housekeeping at all times in and around the site and by observing all rules and regulations

Volunteers will perform light cleanup in the campground (two-three hours per day), checking restrooms and alerting staff to any issues including locking stalls if maintenance is required, general litter pickup, placing permits at campsites and remove expired permits from site posts, cleaning out fire rings.

Evansburg maintains a number of cavity nest boxes throughout the park.  As part of one of our longest running citizen-science projects, volunteers assist with routine nest box checks throughout the nesting season, collecting data on species and nesting success rates, as well as conducting maintenance and sanitation duties and entering season data.  Evansburg's cavity nest boxes routinely host bluebirds, swallows, wrens, and sparrows, among others.  This is a seasonal program running spring through fall.

Volunteers are encouraged to share their passions and expertise. Working with the volunteer coordinator, this opportunity allows volunteers to substitute for educators, help with educational field trips, or lead their own programs.

Help us document how the cavity-nesting birds at Cherry Springs are doing!  Monitor bluebirds, tree swallows, other species using nest boxes throughout the park.

Check each box weekly, recording data that will be compiled and included in the Statewide Cavity Nesting Report. One volunteer per week, coordinator will contact you to schedule shifts that work for you.

New and returning volunteers must sign up for this opportunity annually to remain an active member. Becoming a "fan" of a location bookmarks the location for you but remains private; signing up for an opportunity is required to connect you with the coordinators of the forest district. New and returning volunteers will be awarded with 1/2 hour of volunteer service for their first registration.

Would you like to come out and help get the park ready for another busy summer season?  If so, come join us on Saturday May 2nd beginning at Shelter 4 at 730am.  Projects may include things like litter clean up, invasive plant removal, light painting/staining, tree planting (if trees are available) as well as other basic maintenance tasks. 

All hand tools, gloves, trash bags and safety vests will be provided.  Please wear appropriate clothing such as shoes and long pants and bring sunblock, bug spray and water.  

Pre-registration is required by calling the park office at 724 932 3141.  If you need an accommodation, please let us know when you register.

Free camping in Jamestown Campground Friday May 1st and Saturday May 2nd is available for all registered volunteers.  Sites will be issued upon registration with the park office.

Lunch will be provided By the Pymatuning Lake Association Saturday May 2nd at approximately 12pm.  

Washington Crossing Park has a total of 42 cavity nest boxes throughout the park.

Help monitor Bluebirds and other species nesting throughout the park. Volunteers check each box weekly and record data that is then compiled and included in the Statewide Cavity Nesting Report.

The Butler Outdoor Club promotes outdoor education and provides year-round outdoor activities in Western Pennsylvania and surrounding areas. Our activities include: hiking, backpacking, biking, birding, canoeing, kayaking, xc-skiing, snowshoeing, camping and trail maintenance.

Nolde Forest participates in Project Feeder Watch every season from November to March.

There are many ways to volunteer to help maintain the trails at Nolde Forest.

During the Spring, Summer, and Fall, our volunteer trail crew meets on Sunday evenings. If you are interested in joining this group, please call the park office for more information as meeting location and times change weekly depending on park needs. Trail Crew members, please record your weekly hours here.

If working independently is more your style, we also have a volunteer "Adopt-a-Trail" program. You will be assigned a trail in the park and you can come volunteer on your trail as your schedule allows. There is no set time, though we ask that you come out and check the trail at least once a month. But this option allows you to volunteer on your own schedule when it works for you. After an orientation with park staff you will simply show up when convenient for you, access the volunteer tools, and work for as long as your day allows. Please record your independent volunteer hours here for any trail work duties.

Assist with the prep, sap collection, wood carrying, fire stoking, boiling down, filtering, finishing, bottling, & more related to producing maple syrup. Learn how to produce syrup from tree to table, working behind the scenes in concert with trained staff and other volunteers. Work hours and days will vary greatly based on the forecast, sap runs, and timing related to outreach efforts. The range of timing of mid-Feb to the end of March typically is the longest possible season, but usually it's one or two 1/2 days a week for most of a 3- or 4-week season. Let's see what this year brings!

The mission of the Friends of Tyler State Park is to support the park in preserving, promoting, and maintaining the educational, recreational, natural, and historical resources of the park. The Friends of Tyler State Park hosts community service, recreational and educational events. 

Those interested in hosting at our park should start here. While this step doesn't require clearances, you will work with park staff to either submit those or complete them if you are selected for hosting at our park. Hills Creek is a popular hosting park, so please be aware we can't accept all applicants. Invasive plant species degrade the ecosystem functioning in our parks. At Samuel S. Lewis State Park, the understory has been completely replaced by these plants. They are not valuable to wildlife and prevent native species from regenerating. Because these plants take up space, nutrients, and sunlight sections of the woods at Sam Lewis will not be able to regenerate as trees age and die.

The GRT will offer four events to provide participants a choice of distances to match their experience, early-season fitness, and season-long goals – the 20 Mile Trail Run, the 50K and 50 Mile Ultramarathons and the 50-Mile 5-person relay. Except for a short stretch at the start and near the end, the 20 Mile and 50K events will be entirely on an exceptional single-track trail. In addition to the single-track, the 50 Mile course also includes a section of very runnable, yet very hilly, double-track/fire roads through beautiful hardwood forests. This race is held annually to celebrate our local trails and to provide a donation of all net proceeds to Moraine State Park, Jennings Environmental Center and McConnells Mill State Park. Our generous race sponsors have offset many of the race costs so that $140,000 could be provided to these parks over the race’s lifespan of thirteen years.

Moraine Preservation Fund (MPF) is a non-profit, volunteer organization that supports Moraine State Park. MPF has helped to develop important wildlife restoration projects like Project BATitat, the Osprey and Barn Owl Reintroduction Programs, along with the creation of a Native Plant & Butterfly Trail near the Giftshop.
MPF operates the Owlet Gift Shop located at McDanel’s Boat Launch, located off the North Shore park exit on Rt. 422 in Portersville. Moraine Preservation Fund also operates Preston’s Pearl, an enclosed pontoon boat that offers interpretive boat tours around Lake Arthur.  
Our Mission:
To promote community stewardship of natural resources within Moraine State Park, McConnells Mill State Park and Jennings Environmental Education Center.

Occasionally we need assistance with on-going research within our American Chestnut orchards.  This may include harvesting nuts, measuring, mowing, cutting, or pruning trees. 

This opportunity is for logging hours from last year's Women in the Wild program. Please do not sign up for this opportunity if you are interested in helping with 2026. 

This project is to help us maintain and weed our flower beds at the park office. No knowledge of plants needed for basic weeding and maintenance. If you prefer to work on your own over time, we do ask that you become familiar with the plants in the beds. This opportunity may also include mulching once a year. 

Help us install our charismatic cartoon characters throughout the Covered Bridge Trail for Light Up Little Buffalo! This job requires pounding in stakes and use of a drill to secure the figures to the stakes. It is generally done in November before the ground freezes. 

We're looking for volunteers with an eye for interior design to help us wow our visitors! Our Outdoor Classroom, Train Car, Pavilion, and Shoaff's Mill will all need decorated, and it could be up to you to determine how! Coordinate with our staff to get access to our indoor decorations and you decide when a good time is for you to help us bring some holiday cheer to these buildings.

McConnells Mill is an historic treasure.  Many stories are still out there, waiting to be told. Help capture the photos, stories, and facts about the rich history of this park. Follow your interests and use your talents for gathering this rich history.

This opportunity is for firewood processing for the campground at Little Buffalo. 

This opportunity is for the care of the Blue Ball Tavern Trail. This trail mostly just requires occasional trash cleanup. We ask that adopters walk the trail monthly from April through October to keep it clean and provide monthly feedback on its care. 

Paddle for the Park is a kayaking fundraising event held in July.  Assistance the day of the event with registration and activities is needed. 

Art in the Park is a fundraiser held several days throughout the year.  Assistance is needed with set-up and tear down.  Also, if you are an artist, there is the opportunity to lead visitors through a painting of the park. 

This opportunity is for anyone interested in instructing for Women in the Wild! We are looking for folks to teach classes for this special event. For more details and how to get involved, reach out to Mindy Wilt at mewilt@pa.gov to see what is still needed! 

This opportunity is for any individual who wants to help us protect our native plant communities and improve habitat in the park! Little Buffalo is plagued with several invasive plants, including mile-a-minute, honeysuckle, autumn olive, privet, multi-flora rose, barberry, and oriental bittersweet. These plants need to be regularly controlled in order to maintain the diverse flora of the park! Help us tackle these invasives by signing on today!

When you sign on to this opportunity, you'll be contacted by park staff for your availability. You will need to meet with park staff to learn what plants to remove and what to protect. We can supply tools and gloves. 

Project FeederWatch is a citizen science initiative to study birds in their winter habitats. Information collected helps scientists understand habitat range, changes in population, health of a species, and more!  Volunteers may sit with the birds for as long as their schedule allows while the Education Center is open.  Project FeederWatch Monitoring 2026 occurs on Thursdays and Fridays:

Do you want to help maintain the trails at Black Moshannon State Park?  If so, then sign up for this opportunity!  The trail crew meets once a month from April until October to help keep the trails in the best shape possible.  Trimming, removing small fallen trees, weed whacking, and other tasks are completed.   You will receive emails that will list the dates that the trail crew will be meeting.  If you are available for any of the dates, you can then sign up to help those days.  

This opportunity is for individuals who would like to help pick up litter around the property! Gloves, trash bags, and trash pickers can be provided. Groups or families who want to volunteer, please contact the volunteer coordinator.

This opportunity is for individuals who maintain bike trails independently by removing small, downed objects or minimal cutting back of overgrown vegetation. For larger projects or teams wanting to volunteer with the bike trails, please contact the volunteer coordinator.

Volunteers maintain this site, and interpret it's history for visitors. An operating central power is tucked in the woods just beyond Muskrat Cove where a stream crosses under the service road. Built at the turn of the century, it contains a Bessemer engine, pumping jacks, and other equipment used during the early days of the oil industry. The engine is operated several times a year, typically second Saturdays of summer and fall months.

This is a volunteer opportunity to help with general park maintenance by cleaning up downed tree limbs, trash and other debris in the park.

The gristmill bakers share their baking knowledge, demonstrate baking and outdoor cooking, and showcase the historic grains that may have been ground in McConnells Mill.

The Native Plant Butterfly Trail is a demonstration garden for educational purposes that is managed by dedicated Master Gardeners who work to remove destructive invasive plants, maintain the trails, and restore plants that are historically native to Butler County, Pennsylvania.   Our goal is to create an appreciation for and understanding of the importance of native plants, the interconnection with pollinators and wildlife, and to encourage their adoption in the home environment. Volunteer opportunities for the Haunted Lake Loop Trail include haunters, registration, decorating, tear down, assistance with the line, handing out candy at the end of the trail, or providing an education table towards the end of the hike.  We do have some costumes to loan, if needed.  More details will be provided to those that sign up to volunteer.  This event takes place rain, snow, or shine.  

Help beautify Black Moshannon State Park!  Projects include litter pickup, painting and sealing, gardening, and trail maintenance.  A free lunch will be provided.  Free camping is available for that weekend for those that volunteer from 9 am to 1 pm.  Please contact the Black Moshannon State Park Office at 814-342-5960 or email blackmoshannonee@pa.gov for the camping.  

Volunteer opportunities for Lumber Legacy Day at Black Moshannon State Park include helping with set up and tear down, running a station, helping the Friends of Black Moshannon with registration, helping with craft set up area, or assisting with giving breaks at the stations.   The stations include scat drop, pinecone toss, horseshoe throw, log rolling, log cross-cut, and ax throwing.  No experience is necessary for these stations.

Help beautify Black Moshannon State Park!  Projects include winter debris removal, painting, sealing, trail maintenance, gardening, and litter pickup.   Lunch will be provided.  Free camping is available that weekend for those that help from 9 am to 1 pm.  Please contact the park office at 814-342-5960 or email blackmoshannonee@pa.gov to get a campsite.  

Help monitor Bluebirds and other species nesting in over 20 cavity nest boxes throughout the park. Volunteers check each box weekly and record data that is then compiled and included in the Statewide Cavity Nesting Report. One volunteer per week, coordinator will contact you to schedule shifts that work for you.

Help us remove the invasive plants around the park!  This crew meets periodically throughout the year to remove (pruning, cutting, lopping) species such as Japanese Honeysuckle, Callery Pear, and Oriental Bittersweet from various areas of the park.

Pymatuning State Park has three campgrounds, all in need of campground hosts. A campground host is a volunteer that stays on site for at least two weeks at a time, at no charge, and preforms a variety of tasks.  Primarily this person is a steward of the campground and of the park.  They answer questions about the campground and the park, give directions and even make recommendations of what to do in the local community.  Campground hosts also preform light cleaning duties in the restrooms, litter pick up in the campground as well as other minor tasks as needed.

Volunteers are needed to help gather sap, cook it down, and bottle syrup.  Sap collection usually requires about 2 hours, once a week.  Syrup is cooked twice a week - usually from 8AM-3PM. There are many opportunities for various abilities.

Help maintain and improve park trails. Dates and hours vary greatly depending on many factors. Volunteers must work closely with park staff throughout the year and communicate in advance of any trail work.

Looking for hardworking, dedicated individuals to become campground hosts at Tobyhanna State Park.  The campground is open from Early April till mid-October.  We typically ask the host to stay from 3-6 weeks at a time. 

The site available for hosting is pet-friendly and has 120v/30amp/50amp hookup.

The Slippery Rock Gorge is home to miles of trails, many are a part of the North Country Trail Association (NCTA), Wampum Chapter. Discover training opportunities and help maintain the trail as part of this dedicated group of volunteers.
