Description

The Interpretive Program Facilitator & Naturalist serves as an educational ambassador for Greenwood Furnace State Park, assisting with the delivery of high-quality environmental education and interpretive programming. In this role, the volunteer represents the park and the Pennsylvania Bureau of State Parks by engaging visitors of all ages through structured programs, guided experiences, and informal interpretation.

Working under the direction of the Environmental Education Specialist or designee, the facilitator supports the park's mission by providing accurate information, fostering stewardship, ensuring participant safety, and creating positive, inclusive learning experiences.

General Responsibilities:

Program Delivery and Facilitation

  •  Assist with and facilitate environmental education and interpretive programs for diverse audiences, including school groups, families, youth organizations, and the general public.
  • Present or co-lead guided nature walks, interpretive talks, demonstrations, and hands-on activities.
  • Facilitate nature-based games, crafts, and experiential learning activities appropriate to participant age and program goals.
  • Support youth-focused programming such as Junior Naturalist, Youth Environmental Learning Series, Conservation Leadership, or other approved curricula.
  • Follow approved lesson plans, learning objectives, and program standards established by the Bureau of State Parks.

Participant Engagement and Experience

  • Create welcoming inclusive, and engaging learning environments for all participants.
  • Encourage active participation while maintaining group safety and appropriate behavior.
  • Adapt facilitation techniques to accommodate varying ages, abilities, learning styles, and group dynamics.
  • Ensure participants have a positive, educational, and memorable experience.

Professional Representation and Conduct

  • Represent the park in a courteous, professional, and knowledgeable manner.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, punctuality, and reliability when assigned to programs or shifts.

Training, Preparation, and Development

  • Complete orientation or training as offered by the park.
  • Become familiar with park resources, history, ecology, and interpretive themes.
  • Review and prepare lessons plans as needed in advance of assigned programs.
