Description

Position Description: Heritage Day Volunteers assist Frances Slocum State Park staff with the preparation and operation of Heritage Day, an annual family-friendly event celebrating local history, traditional skills, and community heritage. In coordination with park staff, volunteers may help operate activity stations, assist presenters and demonstrators, welcome and direct visitors, support event setup and cleanup, and help ensure the event runs smoothly.


Time Requirement

  • Event date: Sunday, October 11, 2026
  • Event hours: 12:00 PM–4:00 PM
  • Location: Frances Slocum State Park
  • Volunteers may be asked to assist with setup before the event and/or cleanup afterward.
  • Volunteer schedules and assignments will be coordinated with park staff.


General Responsibilities

Event and Station Support

  • Assist with the operation of assigned activity or demonstration stations (Face Painting, Corn Shelling, Gourd Craft, Drumming, Butter Making, Nature Craft).
  • Help explain activities and provide general guidance to visitors.
  • Assist presenters, demonstrators, and community organizations as needed.
  • Monitor station materials and notify park staff when supplies are running low.
  • Help maintain a welcoming, organized, and safe environment.


Visitor Assistance

  • Welcome and direct visitors throughout the event area.
  • Provide general event information and assist visitors in locating activities.
  • Help manage lines, activity flow, and station capacity when needed.
  • Assist families and participants with activities as directed.


Setup and Cleanup

  • Assist with event setup, including arranging tables, chairs, signs, materials, and activity supplies.
  • Help prepare assigned stations before the event begins.
  • Assist with cleanup, material collection, and breakdown following the event.
  • Return borrowed or reusable materials to designated locations.


Basic Requirements

  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to interact positively and respectfully with visitors.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Willingness to work outdoors in variable weather conditions.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods, depending on assignment.


Skills or Training Provided

  • Event orientation and assignment-specific instructions from park staff.
  • Information and materials needed to assist with assigned stations or activities.
  • Guidance on event layout, schedule, and volunteer responsibilities.
